Some Final Thoughts

This traveling group of friends, along with 2 dogs and 4 travel trailers, has had a learning adventure. We started with some questions about why there are still so many divisions in this country. We decided to make it our “winter pandemic project” to study the Civil War followed by a road trip to actual key areas. I think we would all highly recommend this as a fun kind of project for a group of friends. Not only have we learned a lot about the Civil War, but we also figured out how to travel successfully with four travel trailers in a pandemic! We’ve had lots of rich conversation, fun “Happy Hours” and lots of laughter along the way.

We have all collected more books to read as we continue to try and understand. Coming from Minnesota, we immediately noticed George Floyd’s image on a new book that was in several of the Civil War Museums’ gift shops. No Common Ground was just published in April 2021. From the description on Amazon - “ In this eye-opening narrative of the efforts to raise, preserve, protest, and remove Confederate monuments, Karen L. Cox depict what these statures meant to those who erected them and how a movement arose to force a reckoning. It was a reminder again about how what happened in Minnesota with the killing of George Floyd in May 2020 continues to reverberate around the world.

Finally, just as I am writing this last post, we are crossing from Kentucky into Illinois. Greg pointed out a huge Confederate flag blowing in the breeze of this beautiful spring day. I guess our work in healing from the aftermath of the Civil War is still a work in progress!
